I have always been taught to forgive but not to forget because you go through a problem to learn from it and if you forgot it then you went through it for no reason ... that statement is so false. One night I asked God about forgiving and forgetting because I knew there was something more to the forgive and forget theory than I was taught. God revealed to me that when you truly learn from a situation it doesn't have to be at the forefront of your mind all the time because when you learn from something it changes you!
Forgetting doesn't mean to actually remove things from your memory because honestly who actually knows how to do that?!?, but I do mean letting go ... The word says love keeps no records of wrongs. We are called to operate in love. If you claim to have forgiven someone yet you are constantly reminding them of what they did to you, or have that memory on the forefront of your mind you forgave but you didn't forget.
I encourage you to truly study forgiveness in the word of God (mainly how God forgives us), and spend time with God and ask Him to help you do it.
