BeVirtue:Spiritual Growth - The Past Can't Hold You Down

Read Galatians 1:13-15 before reading this.

Not one of us has a perfect past, some are worst than others but no one has a clean slate before they accept Christ. One thing I’ve come to realize is that the past isn’t what holds us down it is us! People just use the past as their excuse for why they choose to stay defeated and stuck in the same stage. The past doesn’t have any stronghold power over you, because if you decided right now that you wanted to do something different about your life and that you wanted to change and be all that God has created to be you could do it! So we can no longer say the past is holding us down it is just an excuse, and as the saying goes excuses are bricks that build a house of failure. Failure & Virtue don’t go together. They are complete oxymorons. God has called us to be virtuous NOT failures!

People will remind you!

Let’s look at Paul he went from killing people who followed Christ, to trying to get people to follow Christ, and people remembered his past for sure!! I don’t know about you but I don’t worry about God’s forgiveness I know he will forgive me and accept me but people are a whole different story. People aren’t as forgiving and receptive as God AT ALL, but despite all of that we need to move forward. I love this song by Israel Houghton the lyrics are “I’m not going back, I’m moving ahead I’m here to declare to you my past is over in you all things are made new surrendered my life to Christ I’m moving forward” … those lyrics get me every single time! YOU ARE A NEW CREATION. Once you accept Jesus into your life it doesn’t matter what you’ve done before, you are made new, holy, and righteous in His sight, and if you aren’t aware His sight is the only sight that matters, because we are living to please him not people ... or at least we should be.

People will remind you of your past, that is a promise I make to you it happens to every single Christian! Don’t get offended and certainly don’t let it hurt you because that is what they are supposed to do. We need to stop putting kingdom expectations in worldly people. People in the world are going to do worldly things that is what they are SUPPOSE to do!

Another way to look at this part of this topic is like this: Once you accept Jesus or even if you accepted Jesus and start to actually get serious about him after, Satan just lost you! You no longer belong to him and he no longer can have access to you and do things to you like he did before so he is going to use every tool possible to get you to digress, and if you ever notice he will always use people who are close to you or people who you were close to at one time. I can’t tell you how many people have said things to me about me changing my lifestyle and being fully devoted to Christ. At first when people would say things to me about my past I would get sad or even discouraged and wish that God would make them instantly forget who I was before God transformed me.

Think about how amazing it would be for people to actually see the change God has made in you. Imagine the credit God would get if people who knew who you were in the past seen how wonderful and virtuous God has made you today, and how he genuinely and truly changed from the inside out.

Unbelievers want to SEE something different, they aren't going to open the bible and read about Paul, and John you have to be a living a bible!

Don’t be afraid to speak boldly about Christ because you are afraid of people reminding you of your past! (Don’t be obnoxious either ladies lol)

Your Past Should Be Kept In The Past

The glory of the latter house shall be greater than the glory of the former house. God is a God of new things! You can’t go to the promise land with Egypt!! The Israelites wandered for 40 years because they just couldn’t let go of what they left in Egypt (along with disobedience and other things). The Israelites constantly complained about the food, and things they had in Egypt. It is almost as if they regretted leaving Egypt in the first place!

Do you regret anything in your past?

Let’s define the word past. The American Heritage Dictionary defines the word past like this: No longer current; gone by; over. The word I like here is OVER! It is kind of like when a show is over and someone is still sitting in the audience waiting to see the show again and the usher tells them its over you will never see that again. God is the usher in this scenario the bible is filled with scriptures about newness, and pressing forward! God even promises to do a NEW thing in our life. God is a God of newness! Let him make all things new in your life, he won’t do that if you continue to blame your past! Another illustration is after you finish reading a book you just stare at that last blank page waiting for something new to appear! The problem is you need to pick up a new book to see something new. God doesn’t add a chapter to the book in your life he gives you a whole new book! A clean slate for you to start new!

**Casting down thoughts is extremely important. Satan will remind you of your past in attempt to steal your joy and distract you DON’T GIVE HIM THE SATISFACTION! Cast down that thought with the word whenever he reminds you of who you use to be open your mouth and quote scripture(2 Corinthians 5:17, Colossians 1:13-14, Romans 8:1 … those are a few you can use) Don’t be fooled God will not remind you of your past in attempt to make you feel bad or “humbled”.

There are times when I am reading The Word or singing praises to God and then I get thoughts of things I use to struggle with and bad things I use to do … that is NOT of God, those are DISTRACTIONS!

Unforgiveness is a form of living in the past!

Ladies when will we realize forgiveness isn’t for the person who hurt you it is completely and entirely for you! Just opening your mouth and saying you forgive a person doesn’t mean you really forgive them. Forgiveness is sometimes a process when it comes to humans because we have emotions, & memories that tie in to our unforgiveness. The quickest way to forgive a person is to forgive, forget, and love them anyway. A lot of pastors preach forgive but not forgive and forget. I’ve heard people say you aren’t supposed to forget because you went through it for a reason, to learn something. Recently God revealed to me that if you truly learned from your experience you won’t need to remember every little thing someone did to you because it will transform you!!

Who do you need to forgive?

Steps That I Believe Will Help You in This Area:

- Study scriptures where God defines you, go to the word to find out who you are. When you know your identity in Christ you will be harden to negative words from people!
- Study Scriptures where God talks about restoration and newness! You need to believe that God has something better ahead in order to let go of regret from the past!!!
- Pray. Let God know you want to forgive this person and release them of whatever pain they caused you, and ask Him to show you, and help you love that person despite your personal feelings towards them.
- Ultimately I recommend studying the life of Jesus although Jesus didn’t have a negative past because He was always perfect, He didn’t let the distractions of this world get to Him. Why? Because He was totally focused on God. A lot of things in this world that we stress are just distractions so that we can take our eyes off of God, including dwelling in the past!!

**REMEMBER: Before you can have victory in this process if you have been through something that has emotionally or mentally scarred you, you have to deal with that issue first.

I pray that this article will help, encourage, and bless you!!
